When I was a little girl, I was OBSESSED with horses of all types (notably unicorns) and this movie was my all-time favorite. It released in 1982 and was based on the novel of the same name by Peter S. Beagle. The cast is superb, included are Jeff Bridges, Mia Farrow, Christopher Lee, Renee Auberjonois and Angela Lansbury.
It tells the story of a unicorn who believes she is the last of her kind after hearing two hunters say so. She leaves her forest to find the lost unicorns with only the story of a scatterbrained butterfly to guide her. The unicorn is captured by a traveling freak show until Schmendrick, a bumbling magician, befriends and frees her. Later, they are joined by Molly Grue, a scullery maid. Together they set off to find what is causing the disappearance of the unicorns.
Though it is marketed as a children's film, it is far more than that. It is a tale of redemption, lost innocence, and the search for identity and truth.
